Professor Ime Ikiddeh: Tribute to a Literary Critic.

"The easiest way to introduce him to some of us is to take us back to Ngugi wa Thiong'o's WEEP NOT, CHILD, for he it was who wrote the Introduction and Notes to that great novel. He and Prof Ngugi had met as mates at Leeds University in the UK in the 1960s, and had become friends. Later, he was to also introduce another of Ngugi's works, this time a collection of Essays." -- Joe Ushie

Ime Ikiddeh

Denied Professorship for a while
but stuck to his guns in the wild
with his flaming cigarettes
made eloquent speeches
he had a great smile for all
with charm that could make ladies fall

he had a heart of gold
did his best us to mould
still think of you in silence
with fading fond memories
true legend one of the best
in peace have your rest

The Ime Ikiddeh I Remember

Professor Ime Ikiddeh, always wearing a winning and seductive smile.

Ever gentle, ever soft spoken, never overbearing or domineering, never adopting a pontificating or know-it-all posture, but very deep and well regarded.

Red lips clutching a cigarette, sucking romantically and deeply, igniting a red tip, exhaling smoke as if smoke tasted anything other than smoke.

Watching him go through this ritual was an open temptation to smoking.

Prof, your class was always lively and exciting as you encouraged the free expression of ideas by your students.... no idea ever appearing stupid as far as you were concerned.

May your gentle and fun-loving soul rest in peace.

Ancestor in Fossil Text

(for Ime Ikiddeh)

Was his time a splinter running
In the hurry of an impatient flood, running through
Where he homed, which he found
In the string of letters leading Leeds to Canaan
On the cruise and bruise of chalk on the frowning boards

Was his time a sprouting many
Many ushies many ohas many eshiets many okus many effiongs
That have become his story, ancestor in the fossil text
His last nsibidi of many questions

Which market to visit, to search
If he would choose to present his walking stick, his hero's feathers
At midnight or midday when the tiny bells announce
And how many cowries for his crown of songs

In octobering heroism he strides on
His mortal weaknesses discarded for ceremony
A long journey only few halos away
A welcome waiting till the last teardrop.
